Reader Comment: Don’t be an idiot and check out one company. How the hell would you know if you got a good price if you only get a quote from one company? Don’t be a complete moron. I used the link at the top of the page and got a bunch of quotes. I got a great deal by comparing. Mark

Motorcycle Insurance In Houston With a Bad Driving Record

motorcycleReader Question:

I don’t have a good driving record, how can I get the best motorcycle insurance rate in Houston?
Stephen

I have good news and bad news for you Stephen. Drivers with a record are considered a high risk and pay high premiums. That is the bad news but all is not lost.

You can off set some of this by taking a motorcycle driver’s training course. Insurance companies give discounts for taking a course. Check out one of the many training schools in Houston.

I don’t know if you have already bought your motorcycle but if you haven’t then consider buying a less expensive or used motorcycle. As the size of your engine goes up so too does your premium, a motorcycle with a smaller engine can really cut your cost.

You can’t negotiate rates with an insurance company, but you can shop around. One insurance company may look at your record and be very hard on you with high rates where another insurance company may be very forgiving, especially if you took a training course and have much lower rates. Do your footwork and get several quotes. Online services like the one on the page make the process quick and easy. I just recently got auto insurance and when I used an online service for the quotes the agents email me with the estimates. They did the work for me.

I hope this answers your question. Drive safe and enjoy your bike.

Motorcycle Insurance for a Guest Rider

Reader Question: I just bought a new bike and want to take my girlfriend on it. If I have a rider on my bike, do I have to insure my rider? I am looking for insurance but I don’t want a higher premium.

Freerider,

Way to go on the girl and the bike. You definitely want to be sure that you and your girlfriend are taken care should you get in an accident on your bike. If this is your first bike I would recommend that you take a motorcycle safety driving course. Many insurance companies offer a 10 to 15 percent discount for taking and passing a driving safety course, so be sure to find that out. If you plan to have guest riders on your motorcycle, be sure to discuss this with your agent, as each company has its own policy. A guest rider may increase your premiums. Shop around to find the agent or company that is right for you.
